Sunrisers Hyderabad is the new name for the franchise from Hyderabad after the previous franchise called Deccan Chargers was terminated in 2012. They are owned by Kalanithi Maran of the Sun TV Network. The line-up remained similar to what was there for the Chargers. However, there was a change in the coaching staff with Tom Moody heading the job while VVS Laxman assumed the role of a mentor.
The team made their first IPL appearance in 2013, where they reached the playoffs, eventually finishing in fourth place led by Kumar Sangakkara-Cameron White. For the 2015 season, SRH released some players and appointed David Warner as their skipper. The team didn't do too well under his captaincy in that particular season, however, in 2016 they managed to win their maiden Indian T20 League trophy. In the following edition, defending their title, they lost to Kolkata in Eliminator which was a rain-hit game. That year, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was able to retain the Purple Cap while David Warner won the Orange Cap.
David Warner stepped down from captaincy in 2018 after his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering controversy that rocked Australia. The Kiwi, Kane Williamson, was appointed as his replacement and he didn't disappoint. He not only took them to the final with his great captaincy but also earned the Orange Cap.
In the following two seasons, Hyderabad put up consistent shows and reached the playoffs however they failed to taste glory on both occasions. In 2021, Hyderabad failed to be at their best and after losing 6 out of their first 7 games, David Warner was sacked from captaincy and Kane Williamson was given the charge again. They eventually finished the edition by bagging the unwanted wooden spoon.
Hyderabad bought Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T. Natarajan, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Rahul Tripathi, Abhishek Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Washington Sundar, Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Phillips during the Indian T20 League 2022 Mega auction. Kane Williamson led the team in the 2022 season. They finished in 8th place on the points table. After initial success, the team lost five back-to-back matches and didn't qualify for the playoffs. For the 2023 season, Hyderabad appointed Brian Lara as head coach and let go of a few marquee players like Kane Williamson and Nicholas Pooran. Aiden Markram was appointed as the skipper but his own form took a dip and apart from a couple of consistent performers like Heinrich Klaasen and Bhuvneswar Kumar, the team struggled and finished with just 4 wins from 14 games.
Following the 2023 Season debacle, Hyderabad announced Daniel Vettori as the head coach replacing Brian Lara, and released the likes of Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, and Kartik Tyagi ahead of the 2024 auction. On the auction day, Hyderabad purchased the likes of Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Jaydev Unadkat. They also announced Pat Cummins as the new captain for the 2024 season replacing former captain Aiden Markram following a poor 2023 season.
