AAP appoints Ashish Talwar as Delhi in-charge
NEW DELHI: With the MCD elections approaching closer, the Aam Aadmi Party has appointed senior party leader Ashish Talwar as in-charge (Prabhari) of the Delhi unit in a bid to strengthen the city unit.
Talwar, besides being party’s national executive member, is the political adviser to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Sources said there will be no change in the state unit and Delhi convener Dilip Pandey will continue to hold his post.
“Talwar was appointed as the first convener of Delhi unit in 2013. He is also one of the founder members who had contributed greatly in stitching together the state unit. He has again been assigned the job to strengthen it,” a senior party leader said.
While the party has been focusing on Punjab polls scheduled early next year, elections for the three municipal corporations in the National Capital are also scheduled for April-May nexty ear.
While the party has decided not to contest Delhi University Students’ Union polls, its performance in the upcoming civic polls will be seen as the barometer of its popularity in the capital that gave historic mandate to the Arvind Kejriwal-led front in 2015 assembly polls.
AAP won five of the 13 municipal wards that went to by-polls in May, but it was seen as a setback for the party going by the mandate it received just over a year ago. With 21 party legislators facing threat of disqualification for allegedly holding office of profit, the party may also be forced to go to by-polls.
