Look Within

The Buddhist Study Centre, The Gandhi Study Centre and The Guru Nanak Study centre run by UGC at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College offer a unique opportunity to students to read and apply philosophies of these three personalities.

Classes are held all around the year on Saturdays in the college premises.

Scholars from organisations such as Vipassana, Bharat Soka Gakkai and Gandhi Darshan Samiti are invited to conduct classes.

Students are taken on trips to related places such as Sanchi, Mathura and Amritsar. Students are engaged in activities such as self-employment programs (a principal that Mahatma Gandhi emphasised), debates and skits based on the life of these three personalities.

“Students coming from very humble and troubled backgrounds have gained confidence to take responsibility of their circumstances after attending these courses,” said Dr Surjeet Jolly, Principal, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College.

“In fact, these courses have also helped them to refresh their knowledge of history.”

What is interesting is that these courses are held free of cost. The students are not even charged for the field trips.

Know India Better

Eleven certificate courses covering areas like Indian economy, languages, politics, music, philosophy, literature, developments in science and technology and photography are being offered.

These courses, each encapsulating a section of Indian history, will be conducted from September to December this year.

“Through these courses, students are able to get a grasp of a particular shade of Indian society in a short time, through these courses,” says Dr Nisha Singh, who has been instrumental in setting up infrastructure for the courses. “Foreign universities give high weightage in their applications to such expertise,” she says.

Become career wise

Students may widen their career choices with a range of courses that are being offered at Hindu College and Miranda House. Hindu College is offering a three-month long course on acting skills and a course on electronics and computers for chemists.

The two colleges are also offering a short-term course on Green Chemistry, which covers areas like environmental concerns and waste management. Other courses being offered at Miranda House are three-months-long Operations research course, an English to Hindi translation course.
