The constable, identified as Gurbej Singh, was bashed up, his uniform torn off and turban defiled by the men when he stopped them from consuming liquor at the public place.
Singh is posted at Connaught Place area and was on motorcycle patrolling duty when the incident took place at around 11.40 pm on December 31.
The police have arrested the three accused, identified as Govind Ram, Aman and Sagarm. All of them work with a travel agency. One of them had taken off his shirt and was dancing on the road.
“Singh stopped his motorcycle and went to stop them from creating commotion in the area. He asked them to mend their ways and stop consuming liquor at the public place. Instead of heeding to his request, they continued shouting and drinking liquor,” said the senior officer.
Even though Singh, the officer said, had approached the youths politely, Sagar caught hold of his uniform and started assaulting him. “Singh tried to run away from the spot, but Aman chased him and the three assaulted Singh. In the melee, they even tore off Singh’s uniform and defiled his turban,” the officer added. Singh started screaming for help which caught the attention of some people who rescued him. The victim constable was sent to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for a medical examination.
