Dismissed IB officer held in robbery case

A dismissed Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer, who had been evading the law for the past nine years in a sensational armed robbery case at Haridwar in Uttarakhand, was arrested on Friday by the Delhi police. Karn Pratap Singh reports.

A cash reward was declared on his head by the Uttarakhand police and the former IB officer, Bansant Dhankhar, was also declared a proclaimed offender by a Haridwar court.

Apart from his alleged involvement in the robbery case, Dhankhar, 32, was also wanted in two domestic violence cases lodged against him at two police stations in Delhi by two different women whom he had married by claiming himself as unmarried. Dhankhar was nabbed by a team of southeast district's Greater Kailash (GK) police station from GK-I.

Police said that Dhankhar had cheated many innocent women by marrying them, even when he was not divorced.

Dhankhar, an assistant central intelligence officer in IB, was dismissed from his service in 2010 following cases of domestic violence and criminal breach of trust registered against him at Vasant Kunj and GK police stations in 2005 and 2009, respectively.

A senior police officer said Dhankhar in 2003, before his employment in IB, had committed an armed robbery at a mobile phone shop in Haridwar.

"Dhankhar along with his accomplice Dipender Pratap Singh had gone to a mobile shop at Civil Lines in Haridwar. When the shopkeeper showed them some costly phones, the two brandished their country-made pistols and robbed the shopkeeper of his mobile phones," said the senior officer.
