An investigation into a car theft reported at Safdarjung Enclave in December first week has revealed that it was Bunty who allegedly barged into the bungalow of the complainant in Green Park and escaped with her BlackBerry phone and Volkswagen Vento, sources said.

Shalini Melhotra, 46, a graphic designer who lives in C block in Green Park, has said in the FIR that a man, wearing a red sweater, barged into her house in the morning, took the car keys and her phone from one of the rooms and ran towards the garage. There he started the car and escaped after breaking through the iron gates.

Melhotra tried to stop him, but could not.

While senior police officers are tight-lipped on this revelation, sources said the involvement of Bunty in the case has been established by CCTV footage and the statement of an attendant of a petrol pump in Dhaula Kuan area.

A police officer said that they examined footage of CCTV cameras installed in the lanes adjacent to the complainant’s bungalow. “During scrutiny, one of the CCTV footages showed a man driving the complainant’s car, whose physical description resembled Bunty. Initially, we did not believe that Bunty is back, even though the modus operandi of the thief matched with his style of operation. We checked with the Tihar jail administration who confirmed his release from jail,” said the officer.

The second evidence that established his involvement in the case was the testimony of an attendant of a petrol pump who was hoodwinked, allegedly by Bunty. A day after the incident, the attendant was on duty when a man in a similar Volkswagen Vento asked him to fill the oil tank of the car.

“The attendant filled petrol worth Rs 5,600. But before he could collect cash, the driver fled with his car. The attendant raised an alarm. The police showed him photographs of some history-sheeters, including Bunty’s photo. He confirmed that the man who duped him was Bunty,” added the officer.
