The subsidised accommodations for Parliamentarians in the heart of Delhi are in for a major makeover.
The House Committee of the Parliament has approved an urban development ministry proposal to demolish the existing two-storey buildings on North and South Avenue and replace them with swanky, hi-tech three-storey apartments.
The apartments, each of which will cost Rs 55 lakh, will be digitally controlled.
"Parliamentarians living there would be given swipe cards to enter their flats," said a ministry official.
Even the entry and exit gate to the building would be access controlled and have CCTV cameras.
"We have seen the plan. The construction will be in a phased manner as it is impossible to accommodate more than 350 MPs residing on these two roads elsewhere during construction period," former House Committee chairman JP Aggarwal told HT.
Presently, the two-storey blocks in North Avenue has 232 flats while South Avenue has 196 flats. The proposed redevelopment plan will have a total of 414 flats - all four bedroom flats with attached servant's room and lift. The major makeover buildings will also have a community hall and dispensary.
Aggarwal said the redevelopment plan was necessitated as the existing houses had become very old and unliveable. They are plagued with a host of problem ranging from seepage to termite infestation.
Central Public Works Department spends Rs 5 crore annually to maintain the flats on the two roads that came up sometime in 1930. UD ministry will soon send the plan to Delhi Urban Arts Commission and Prime Minister's Office for approval.
