A plan to commit back-to back burglaries at the home of a Delhi University professor landed a youth and his three associates in police net in north Delhi’s Roop Nagar on Sunday. All the four arrested youths are juveniles.

According to the police, the apprehended youths had robbed the home of the professor of Daulat Ram College only two months ago. They had fled with cash and valuables worth around Rs. 10 lakh from the professor’s house.
Taking advantage of the fact that despite efforts, the police had not been able to make any breakthrough in the case, the youths planned to burgle the same house again.
“Unfortunately, luck was not on their side this time and they were caught red-handed,” said a senior police officer, adding that the matter came to their notice on Sunday afternoon when a call was made to the police control room.
Madhu Aggarwal, a professor in Daulat Ram College, told police that on Sunday morning, she had gone to the market for shopping after locking her house properly.
“Around 3.45pm, she returned home with her husband, Subhash Chand Aggarwal, and they heard some noises in their house. They went in and found some youths ransacking their house. They then raised an alarm,” said Sindhu Pillai, deputy commissioner of police (north).
“While two of the youths, armed with knives, fled after threatening the couple, the other two who tried to escape with stolen items were overpowered by some neighbours. They were handed over to police. The other two were caught later,” said Pillai, adding the professor told them that two months ago a similar burglary had taken place at her house.
During interrogation, a police officer said, one of the apprehended youths confessed that they had committed the burglary at the house of the complainant.
“We are verifying their claims,” the officer said.
