While the previous year saw as many as 15 cases of crime against senior citizens, ranging from murder to dacoity and robbery, the sensational murder case of Sarojini Bartwal at her Mayur Vihar residence, rocked the city on Tuesday morning.

The murder has taken place just four days after BK Gupta, Delhi Police commissioner, at the annual Press conference assured that safety and security of senior citizens and women will be his top priority this year.

According to the annual report of the Delhi Police, more than 12,788 senior citizens are registered with the senior citizen cell of the Delhi Police.

Last year, a couple of murder cases were registered. Ana Mammen, 79, mother of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar’s lawyer Rebecca John was found strangled at her house in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar in March.

Another another such incident, 82-year-old Vimla Shah was smothered to death at his Jungpura residence in south Delhi in November. Around two months after the murder, the police arrested two Nepali nationals, including the domestic help who worked at her house. Shokat Begum, 62, was killed by her Bangladeshi tenant at her residence in central Delhi’s Hauz Qazi area in March.
