Members of the ABVP and a few parents alleged that some students were allegedly denied admission to the BA programme. They said college officials claimed that seats have already been filled up.

Parents and students, including members of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), stormed the principal’s office at Daulat Ram College and staged a protest, after officials allegedly denied students admission under the first cutoff list on Wednesday.

Members of the ABVP and a few parents alleged that some students were allegedly denied admission to the BA programme. They said college officials claimed that seats have already been filled up.

Tempers also ran high when the authorities stopped the parents of the aspirants from entering college premises.

“This is our first time in Delhi and the parents should have been allowed inside the campus at least. We have been waiting for our child to come out for the past four hours. Her cellphone is unreachable, we are worried now.” said KR Rawat, a parent of an applicant.

A student, Ayushi Thakur, who was seeking admission to the BA Programme course fainted in the queue and had to be rushed to the Hindu Rao hospital.

“The college has no volunteers to guide students nor are parents allowed inside the campus. There is utter mismanagement here.” said Madan Mohan Thakur, father of Ayushi Thakur.

The ABVP members and parents who stormed the principal’s office also allegedly damaged some furniture and her computer.

“An FIR has been registered against unknown persons under appropriate sections,” said Jatin Narwal, DCP (North).

Other parents like Bhupender (who requested to use his first name only), who was also protesting outside the principal’s office, claimed that the college had denied his child a seat saying that they had filled up all the seats. “We were under the impression that students would not be denied admission if they had cleared the cutoff. They should have increased the cutoff then, if they do not have the seats,” he said.

The cutoff for the BA programme at Daulat Ram College is 91%, two percentage points more than the last year.

The College administration, however, maintained they had not denied students admission to the BA programme course, but had only said that they would not be able to opt History and Political Science combination.

“We have already admitted almost five times the number of available seats. We have 169 seats for BA programme, of which 20 was supposed to be for the History/Political Science combination. We have already admitted approximately 100 students for this combination,” said Preeti Kapur, the co-convenor of the college’s admissions committee.

A DU official confirmed that though colleges cannot deny admissions to the course, they can, depending on their infrastructure and other factors like faculty strength, refuse certain subject combinations.

Kapur also said that those students who had reached the college premises before 1:30 pm on Wednesday, would be given admission to their course of their choice.
