Seen as a culmination of King Abdullah’s vision, the university is already attracting students from around the world because of its infrastructure and research facilities.

Talking on the edge this institution has over other similar universities around the world, Professor Choon Fong Shih, president, KAUST, said, “The university has plenty of resources that can be utilised in research work. We have a lot of sun here so we can use it for research in solar energy. Then we are also focusing on desalination of water.”

“KAUST focuses on attracting world-class scientific and research talent, regardless of gender,” said Ali Al-Naimi, chairman of the new university’s board of trustees and the Saudi minister of petroleum and mineral resources. “This is the House of Wisdom.

Here the focus is going to be education and research, nothing else. We believe that our graduates will create a knowledge economy,” the minister added.
