“BJP will take support from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and independent candidates” Goa chief minister and BJP leader Pramod Sawant said.

As the Bharatiya Janata Party inches closer to the majority mark in counting for the 2022 Goa Assembly election, party leaders are set to call on Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai later today to stake claim to form the government for a second term, news agency ANI reported.

The BJP is set to emerge as the single-largest party in the coastal state but may not have enough to form the government on its own, meaning it will require outside support.

Goa chief minister and BJP leader Pramod Sawant on Thursday said the party will take support from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and independent candidates to form the government.

As per Election Commission data at the time of writing, the ruling party is leading in 18 Assembly seats and the Congress is leading in 10, followed by MGP with three and independent candidates taking the lead in the remaining seats.

Sawant has won his race - from the Sanquelim Assembly seat - by defeating Congress' Dharmesh Saglani by a narrow margin of roughly 600 votes.

The BJP is also set to claim emphatic wins in Manipur, UP and Uttarakhand - all states where it already holds the government.

The Aam Aadmi Party will form the government in Punjab after a spectacular win.

The BJP parliamentary board, its apex organisational body, is likely to meet later Thursday to review the party's performance in the five assembly polls.

Elections in Goa were held on February 14 with a voter turnout of 79.61 per cent. Nearly 9,27 lakh of the 11.64 lakh eligible people voted, while over 29,000 postal ballots were issued.

The BJP put up candidates for all 40 seats, while the Goa Forward Party (GFP) entered into a pre-poll alliance with Congress and the Trinamool allied with the MGP.

The Goa polls saw 301 candidates representing 12 political parties, besides independents - nearly 21 per cent higher than the 2014 elections and about 50 per cent higher than the 213 candidates from 2012.
