A three-term Congress legislator, Lourenço was all set for a fourth term before he committed a political blunder. He was rumoured to join the BJP, and then the Aam Aadmi Party, but finally shook hands with the Trinamool Congress after having patched up with the Congress leadership and receiving a call from Rahul Gandhi. He quickly realised his move to the TMC was a mistake, as in his own words “friends started despising me” for shifting away from the Congress. He quit the TMC, but was not taken back into the Congress, forcing him to contest as an Independent candidate.
