BJP leader Bhupendra Patel took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for a second straight term in Gandhinagar on Monday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries. Patel was administered the oath as the 18th chief minister by Governor Acharya Devvrat at a function held at the Helipad Ground near the new Secretariat.

The ceremony is being attended by top leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and the chief ministers of several other BJP-ruled states. Media reports indicate over 200 holy men will also attend.

The saffron party recorded a resounding win in this month's Assembly election by bagging 156 out of 182 seats. Rivals Congress and debutants Aam Aadmi Party - expected to provide a stern test - failed to do so, winning just 16 and five seats, respectively.

Bhupendra Patel - who won his first election in 2017 from Ghatlodia - defended the seat in this round of polling - by a massive 1.92 lakh votes, earning praise from the prime minister. Patel was selected as chief minister only in September last year, replacing Vijay Rupani as the BJP sought to ward of anti-incumbency in the prime minister's home state.

The BJP's final number of seats represents a record tally, beating the 127 it won in 2002 (when Modi was chief minister) and the 149 the Congress won under Madhavsinh Solanki in 1985.
