Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh (73), who is seeking a re-election from Thoubal assembly constituency, is the state's longest serving chief minister (2002-2017). A part-time contractor after graduation, Ibobi began his political career in 1981 and won his first assembly election as an Independent candidate in 1984, but joined the Congress a year later. Since then, he rose within the party ranks and became its state president in 1999. Later, he won several assembly elections and became the chief minister in 2002 and held the seat till 2017. In 2012, he led the Congress to victory for the 3rd time with an absolute majority of 42 out of the 60 assembly seats.
