National People's Party chief Conrad Sangma takes oath as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term.
Besides Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and JP Nadda are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony of both the chief ministers.
BJP's bigwigs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, constantly targeted National People's Party leader and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma for running the "most corrupt" state government in the country.
Narendra Modi will visit Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura to attend the swearing-in ceremonies of chief ministers and other leaders on March 7 and 8.
Meghalaya assembly election 2023: On Friday, Conrad Sangma had submitted a letter of support signed by 32 legislators—one more than the required 31- and staked a claim to form the next government.
Earlier in the day, the outgoing CM had told the governor that he has an "absolute majority with more than 32 MLAs from several parties" on his side in the 60-member assembly.

The NPP and the BJP fought a bitter political campaign after deciding to contest the polls independently, despite being coalition partners in the previous government, with “corruption” and “high-handedness” the buzzwords from the two camps.
Sangma, 45, won the seat by securing 13,342 with a vote share of 52.04 per cent. His nearest rival Bernard N Marak of the Bharatiya Janata Party got 8,326 votes. Sangma's National People's Party and the BJP were coalition partners but fought elections separately.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong defeated his nearest rival Nehru Suting of Congress by 8,140 votes, according to the ECI website. He bagged 13,745 votes with a vote share of 39.54 per cent.

Voters of Nagaland and Meghalaya are casting their votes amid tight security arrangements. The Erode East constituency seat in Tamil Nadu, Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh and Sagardighi in West Bengal was vacated after the demise of Thirumahan Everaa, Jambey Tashi, Subrata Saha, respectively.
The northeastern states of Nagaland and Meghalaya are all set to go to the polls on Monday with the Election Commission and security agencies adopting all necessary steps to ensure a smooth voting process, according to people aware of the details.
