Balachaur comes under the Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar district and it is one of the 117 Punjab Legislative Assembly Constituencies . People of Balachaur voted for Punjab Assembly Election 2022 on February 20 and the results was declared on March 10.
In 2017, the Balachaur assembly seat had 1,48,292 registered voters. Of the, 77,945 were male and 70,347 were female voters. 0.6% of votes were casted for NOTA.
In the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly Election, there were 10 candidates in the fray from Balachaur constituency. Balachaur was one of 77 seats won by the Indian National Congress. Indian National Congress's Darshan Lal won the election upstaging Shiromani Akali Dal's Nand Lal by a margin of 19,640 votes.
86.8% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Indian National Congress's Darshan Lal grabbed a total of 49,558 votes, while Shiromani Akali Dal's Nand Lal got 29,918 votes. Aam Aadmi Party's candidate Raj Kumar bagged 21,656 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 42.5%, 25.7% and 18.6% respectively.
In Punjab Assembly election 2012, Shiromani Akali Dal's Nand Lal defeated Bahujan Samaj Party's Shiv Ram Singh by 14,857 votes.
