It was a close contest with Indian National Congress's Gurmeet Singh Sodhi winning the election upstaging Shiromani Akali Dal's Vardev Singh by a margin of just 6,041 votes.

Indian National Congress's Gurmeet Singh Sodhi grabbed a total of 63,032 votes, while Shiromani Akali Dal's Vardev Singh got 56,991 votes. Aam Aadmi Party's candidate Malkit Chand bagged 14,282 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 46.2%, 41.7% and 10.5% respectively.
In Punjab Assembly election 2012, Indian National Congress's Gurmeet Singh Sodhi defeated Shiromani Akali Dal's Vardev Singh by 3,249 votes.
