Punjab Key Candidates

A two-time chief minister of Punjab and veteran politician, Captain Amarinder Singh (79) is leading his new political party — Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) — in this year’s assembly elections polls. The 2022 polls are seen as the toughest challenge for the ‘Maharaja’ of the erstwhile Patiala royal family as his new party is contesting the elections as an NDA ally. He is himself contesting a close battle in the Patiala segment after straining ties with the Congress. The PLC is contesting on 34 seats, but the former chief minister could not get a strong response in Patiala district, barring on half a dozen seats. Amarinder’s proximity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah is his biggest strength in the polls.
