Kharar is one of the 117 Punjab Legislative Assembly Constituencies that comes under the Rupnagar district. Punjab Assembly Election 2022 for Kharar was held on February 20 and the results was declared on March 10.
In 2017, the Kharar assembly seat had 2,22,075 registered voters. Of the, 1,17,819 were male and 1,04,256 were female voters. 0.5% of votes were casted for NOTA.
In the Punjab Legislative Assembly Election 2017, Kharar constituency had 10 candidates for assembly seat contention. Kharar was one of 20 seats won by the Aam Aadmi Party. It was a close contest with Aam Aadmi Party's Kanwar Sandhu winning the election upstaging Indian National Congress's Jagmohan Singh Kang by a margin of just 2,012 votes.
96.7% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Aam Aadmi Party's Kanwar Sandhu grabbed a total of 54,171 votes, while Indian National Congress's Jagmohan Singh Kang got 52,159 votes. Shiromani Akali Dal's candidate Ranjit Singh Gill bagged 46,807 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 34.2%, 32.9% and 29.5% respectively.
In Punjab Assembly election 2012, Indian National Congress's Jagmohan Singh beat Shiromani Akali Dal's Ujjagar Singh by 6,779 votes.
