Malout comes under the Muktsar district and it is one of the 117 Punjab Legislative Assembly Constituencies . People of Malout voted for Punjab Assembly Election 2022 on February 20 and the result was declared on March 10.
Malout assembly constituency had 1,64,832 electors in 2017, out of which 88,035 were male voters and 76,797 females. The None of the Above (NOTA) option got 0.6% votes.
In 2017, 7 candidates were contesting for Malout assembly constituency seat. Malout was one of 77 seats won by the Indian National Congress. It was a close contest with Indian National Congress's Ajaib Singh Bhatti winning the election upstaging Shiromani Akali Dal's Darshan Singh by a margin of just 4,989 votes.
97.5% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Indian National Congress's Ajaib Singh Bhatti grabbed a total of 49,098 votes, while Shiromani Akali Dal's Darshan Singh got 44,109 votes. Aam Aadmi Party's candidate Principal Baldev Singh bagged 38,663 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 36.3%, 32.6% and 28.6% respectively.
In Punjab Assembly election 2012, Shiromani Akali Dal's Harpreet Singh beat Indian National Congress's Nathu Ram by 2,554 votes.
