Mehal Kalan comes under the Sangrur district and it is one of the 117 Punjab Legislative Assembly Constituencies . People of Mehal Kalan voted for Punjab Assembly Election 2022 on February 20 and the results was declared on March 10.

In the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly Election, there were 10 candidates in the fray from Mehal Kalan constituency. Mehal Kalan was one of 20 seats won by the Aam Aadmi Party. It was a one way contest with Aam Aadmi Party's Kulwant Singh Pandori comfortably winning the election upstaging Shiromani Akali Dal's Ajit Singh Shant by a huge margin of 27,064 votes.
The top three candidates split 91.1% of votes between them. Aam Aadmi Party's Kulwant Singh Pandori got a total of 57,551 votes, while Shiromani Akali Dal's Ajit Singh Shant secured 30,487 votes. Indian National Congress's candidate Harchand Kaur grabbed the third spot with 25,688 votes. The top three parties got 46.1%, 24.4% and 20.6% respectively.
In Punjab Assembly election 2012, Indian National Congress's Harchand Kaur defeated Shiromani Akali Dal's Gobind Singh by 7,391 votes.
