It was a close contest with Samajwadi Party's Dr.Sangram Yadav winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's Kanhaiya Lal Nishad by a margin of just 2,467 votes.
The top three candidates split 96.8% of votes between them. Samajwadi Party's Dr.Sangram Yadav got a total of 74,276 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Kanhaiya Lal Nishad secured 71,809 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Akhand Pratap Singh grabbed the third spot with 56,536 votes. The top three parties got 35.5%, 34.3% and 27.0% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Samajwadi Party's Dr.Sangram Yadav defeated Bahujan Samaj Party's Surendra Prasad Mishra by 43,620 votes.
