In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election, there were 12 candidates in the fray from Dataganj constituency. Dataganj was one of 312 seats won by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Bharatiya Janata Party's Rajeev Kumar Singh Urf Babbu Bhaiya won the election upstaging Bahujan Samaj Party's Sinod Kumar Shakya (DEEPU BHAIYA) by a margin of 25,759 votes.
77.0% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Bharatiya Janata Party's Rajeev Kumar Singh Urf Babbu Bhaiya grabbed a total of 79,110 votes, while Bahujan Samaj Party's Sinod Kumar Shakya (DEEPU BHAIYA) got 53,351 votes. Lok Dal's candidate Captain Arjun Singh bagged 39,029 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 35.5%, 23.9% and 17.5% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Bahujan Samaj Party's Sinod Kumar Shakya (Deepu) defeated Samajwadi Party's Prempal Singh Yadav by 5,327 votes.
