In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election, there were 23 candidates in the fray from Gorakhpur Urban constituency. It was a one way contest with Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal comfortably winning the election upstaging Indian National Congress's Rana Rahul Singh by a huge margin of 60,730 votes.

Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal got a total of 1,22,221 votes, while Indian National Congress's Rana Rahul Singh secured 61,491 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Janardan Choudhari grabbed the third spot with 24,297 votes. The top three parties got 56.1%, 28.2% and 11.1% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr Radha Mohan Das Agarwal outperformed Samajwadi Party's Raj Kumari Devi by 47,454 votes.
