It was a close contest with Samajwadi Party's Virendra Kumar Yadav winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's Ram Naresh Kushwaha by a margin of just 3,239 votes.
96.9% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Samajwadi Party's Virendra Kumar Yadav grabbed a total of 71,441 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Ram Naresh Kushwaha got 68,202 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Manish Chandra Pandey bagged 67,223 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 33.5%, 31.9% and 31.5% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Samajwadi Party's Kailash beat Bahujan Samaj Party's Manish Chandra Pandey by 9,464 votes.
