In 2017, 15 candidates were contesting for Meerut assembly constituency seat. Meerut was one of 47 seats won by the Samajwadi Party. Samajwadi Party's Rafiq Ansari won the election by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai by a margin of 28,769 votes.
91.2% of the total votes were casted to top two candidates. Samajwadi Party's Rafiq Ansari got a total of 1,03,217 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai got 74,448 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Pankaj Jauli grabbed 12,636 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties secured 53.0%, 38.2% and 6.5% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai defeated Samajwadi Party's Rafeeq Ansari by 6,278 votes.
