Maurya had won the Sirathu seat in 2012, but had not contested the 2017 polls. His defeat came as a surprise as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with its allies, is set to register a huge poll victory to retain power in Uttar Pradesh.

After losing the polls, Maurya tweeted,"I accept the decision by the voters of Sirathu with humility. I am grateful to the BJP workers for their hard work and the voters who reposed faith in me."

Maurya hailed both PM Modi and chief minister Yogi Adityanath for the poll win, crediting the pro-poor schemes.

“Under chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government successfully took pro-poor welfare schemes initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I am sure the upcoming government will continue to work for the poor.”

Earlier, chief minister Yogi Adityanath too hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Bharatiya Janata Party's incredible performance in Uttar Pradesh. Addressing the party workers in Lucknow, Adityanath said,"The BJP is set to create history in UP under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi."
