Hundreds of policemen from across the state, who shouldered the responsibility of providing security during the recently concluded 47-day annual Magh Mela, in Prayagraj, will get three days special leave for their services. Their leave was withheld due to poll duty but now they will be able to avail the leave in their respective districts.

After the Magh Mela ended, the policemen were deployed on poll duty in different districts during the seven phases of polling. Many of the policemen were directly sent on poll duties without being first attached to their respective districts.

SP Magh Mela Rajeev Narayan Mishra said that now the policemen who were on duty at the Magh Mela may avail their special three-day leave. An order in this connection has been forwarded to all districts. Policemen may avail of their leave after registering their entry at their respective police stations, he added.

Including civil police, PAC and paramilitary, a 5,000-man-strong force was deployed on Mela duty to ensure security of pilgrims and Kalpwasis. Special focus was laid on security during the main bathing days and policemen were deployed at strategic locations besides at different ghats. Only vegetarian police personnel were given duties in Magh Mela to maintain its sanctity.

During the Mela, dozens of policemen were infected with Covid-19 and had to be isolated.
