The Election Commission of India will begin counting votes from 8am onwards. The early trends are likely to emerge within an hour.
Uttar Pradesh went into the polls in seven phases, spanning from February 10 to March 7. The state has the maximum number of constituencies (403). While the 70-member-assembly, Uttarakhand held voting in a single phase on February 14.
Who is against whom?
In Uttar Pradesh, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in a triangular contest with Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP), while the Congress party seems to be losing its ground. Many see the UP elections as the precursor to the Lok Sabha elections. The state is currently under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath who has contested the polls from his home turf Gorakhpur.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand, also under the BJP government, is seeing a direct contest between the ruling party and the Congress. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who took office just eight months before the polls, is projected to toil hard in retaining the saffron fortress in the state.
Exit polls
According to the exit polls, released on Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking at another term in Uttar Pradesh with a clear majority, while Akhilesh Yadav led-SP to finish at number second with Mayawati's BSP and the Congress following it.
In Uttarakhand, a tight race between the ruling BJP and Congress is predicted.
It should be noted that exit polls often go wrong and in no way should be considered as final results.
