Uttar Pradesh gets 34 Muslim MLAs this time, most from Akhilesh Yadav's party

So far, the highest number of Muslim MLAs in the UP Assembly has been 69 in the 2012-2017 term. Here is the list of the Muslim MLAs who reached the house this time.

Uttar Pradesh has voted for 34 Muslim candidates this election season who will now be members of the 18th legislative assembly. A majority of Muslim MLAs come from West UP. Twenty-one Muslim candidates from the western part of the state have been elected, while six are from Central UP and seven from Purvanchal. In terms of party-wise distribution, of tjhe 34, 32 are from the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and two are from the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

The two Muslim MLAs of RLD are Ghulam Mohammad from Siwalkhas and Ashraf Ali from Thana Bhawan. Among these Muslim MLAs, Alambadi from Nizamabad will be the oldest leader to join the state assembly while Abbas Ansari from Mau seat will be the newest member.

So far, the highest number of Muslim MLAs in the UP Assembly has been 69 in the 2012-2017 term. 45 MLAs of these belonged to the Samajwadi Party at that time, according to reports. In 1991, the state assembly reportedly saw the lowest figure when only 17 Muslim MLAs were elected.

In the 2022 state elections, Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party gave tickets to 88 Muslim leaders, according to reports, whereas the Samajwadi Party had fielded 64 Muslim candidates. MP Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had fielded Muslim candidates in more than 60 seats.

Muslim voters are believed to play a decisive role in 143 of 403 assembly seats in UP. In 73 constuencies, the Muslim population is between 35 and 50 per cent.
