Cabinet minister and sitting Chaubattakhal MLA Satpal Maharaj is a political heavyweight in the Garhwal region. Having never lost any assembly election, he left the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016. The Chaubattakhal assembly segment came into existence in 2012 after delimitation. Earlier, a large part of the constituency came under the Bironkhal assembly seat, which was part of the Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency, before it was eliminated after the delimitation. Satpal Maharaj’s wife Amrita Rawat, also known as Shri Amrita Mata ji, represented the assembly segment from 2002 to 2012. In 2012, BJP’s Tirath Singh Rawat, a former chief minister, won from Chaubattakhal, while in 2017 Satpal Maharaj got elected from this seat, which has over 90,000 voters.
