Sumit Hridayesh, son of senior Congress leader late Indira Hridayesh, contested the polls on a Congress ticket as his mother enjoyed a huge clout in the region. She was the Congress’ main political heavyweight in Kumaon. Indira was diagnosed with Covid-19 last year and she succumbed to the illness on June 13, 2021 due to cardiac arrest. In the last four assembly elections, Indira has won this seat three times, barring 2007 when BJP’s Bansidhar Bhagat won this seat. Sumit Hridayesh is pitted against BJP’s JS Rautela and AAP’s Samit Tickoo.

Daughter of former chief minister of Uttarakhand Major General (Retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, Ritu Khanduri won the 2022 assembly elections by defeating Congress' Surendra Singh Negi from the Kotdwar seat by a margin of 3,687 votes.
