It’s a different new year: protests replace celebrations

While many party animals ventured out and made sure the winter chill didn’t dampen their spirits, several Delhiites welcomed the new year while continuing their protest against violence on women. Some protests even continued till very late in the night.

In the middle of a very united Delhi spirit, 2012, one of the most-talked about years, came to an end.

About 40 to 50 people gathered at Anupam Complex, Saket, after midnight and shouted slogans taking on the ‘night’ and subsequently the patriarchal setup in India.

The epicentre of all the protests — Jantar Mantar — too had its own share of protests with even small children joining the crowd. On of them, a four-year-old Shivsi Sachdeva said, “I don’t feel safe in Delhi. I want it to be safe for everyone from 2013.” The protest also included Babusingh Ram, who has been on a hunger strike for almost a week now. He said, “I will be here until some strict laws are made to deal with sexual harassment cases."
