Delhi seems to have found it’s funny bone finally. A group of people now entertain people and tickle their funny bones in different parts of Delhi, mainly south Delhi and Gurgaon. There are stand-up comedy competitions under the name of Open Mic, where people are invited on the stage to crack jokes and win attractive prizes.

Rajnessh Kapoor, the brain and the man behind this event says, “The idea behind the laughter club was to find stand-up comedians in this city and give them a platform to showcase their talent. It has been only two months and Open Mic has already gained a lot of popularity. People mostly from the corporate sector are involved in this event.”
Kapoor says his sense of humour is based on “personal experiences and is quite intelligent and witty”.
When asked what he thinks of English humour, Rajneesh feels strongly that it is really cheap and has a very low standard in India. Comparing the veteran stand up comedian Russel Peters, Rajneesh says, “Russel Peters is good but then he does the same version of Indian accent of what Johny Lever does to the south Indian or the Bengali accent”.
Women are also taking part in this event. Kopal Pandey, who works in the corporate sector, feels that because she is a woman, she gets a lot of respect as a comedian.
“The encouragement and support from my family, who believe I am a nautanki (drama queen) surprised me. It also feels great when the audience applauds, especially from men, who are thought of as sexists. I believe it's nothing but a stereotyping them,” Pandey says.
Unlike Rajneesh, she is a big fan of Russel Peters and mostly her work is inspired from the Canadian. She says, “I am totally inspired by him. My father was in the Indian Air Force, and that’s how I picked up a lot of funny accents; my jokes are generally based on that.”
So what are you waiting for Delhiites? Just attend these comedy sessions to lighten up your day.
