In a letter written to the municipal authorities, who now control the maintenance of over half of Gurgaon, the urban authority has mentioned the urgent need for building underground tanks, installation of flowmeters and making sluice walls operational for canal water connections.

Rattled by repeated water shortages witnessed in different parts of Gurgaon during this summer, the urban authority wants to ensure that MCG does not face similar situation as it takes control of maintenance and water supply across Gurgaon. In a letter written to the MCG, HUDA superintending engineer has asked the corporation to install flow meters over the treated canal as the absence makes it difficult to assess the amount of water drawn by the corporation. It also leads to problems in billing, the letter said.

At several locations in Basai, Gadoli, Harsaru and others the corporation was asked to install and operate sluice valves to control the amount of water that can be drawn. Presently, the water is being withdrawn throughout the day leading to lot of wastage, the letter says. HUDA officials say that while water and power infrastructure is being upgraded by them there is need to reduce wastage, and to measure consumption.

This in fact is also an important step moving towards water-metering, which is non-existent in the city. “The metering of water is crucial as almost 70 per cent of the city is not paying for the water it consumes. We need to reduce wastage, measure consumption and generate revenue”, said Gurgaon MCG Commissioner TL Satyaprakash, who also said that improvement of water infrastructure is a priority.

Another key suggestion for MCG is to build underground water tanks across the city as presently the MCG feeds the water directly into distribution system, which leads to wastage. HUDA wants the MCG to build 12 underground tanks for storage of water, which would help in improved distribution of water into the city.

“We are improving infrastructure at water treatment plants at Basai and Chandu Budhera but it is equally important that corporation takes required steps”, said HUDA executive engineer Bhoop Singh.
