Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has argued that Indian democracy is a global public good and that its erosion would be a "disaster" for American national security. Speaking at a dinner hosted by diaspora member Frank Islam, Gandhi told attendees that the bedrock of an alternative vision to China?s production-based strategy had to be democracy. His comments come ahead of a visit to Washington DC by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and amid accusations from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party that Gandhi is defaming India on foreign soil.

Retain sedition in IPC, make it tougher: Panel

The Law Commission of India has recommended that the country's 153-year-old colonial law on sedition be retained, but amended to bring clarity to its interpretation and usage. The non-bailable offence, which carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment or up to three years in jail, is currently on hold due to a continuing interim order of the Supreme Court. Activists and jurists have alleged it is often misused to muzzle dissent. The Commission suggested amending Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code to align it with the Supreme Court's 1962 verdict in the Kedar Nath Case.

From HT Archives: A big leap towards an equal society

India's first law against untouchability came into effect on June 1, 1955, with the aim of eradicating the practice. Although it had symbolic importance, it was unable to stem the tide of caste-based crime, leading to stronger provisions in 1976 and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in 1989. Despite these efforts, caste-based discrimination remains a reality in India.
