Protect ‘Shivling area’ but allow namaz: SC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that a section of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi Masjid complex where a “Shivling” was ostensibly found shall remain protected until further orders but Muslims will have the right to offer namaz in the mosque without any hindrance, observing that it was “aware of the sensitivities of the matter”.

Election commission of India to share expertise on holding fair polls

Through a cohort on election integrity, the Election Commission of India will provide training and hold capacity building programmes for election management bodies across the world, India’s poll overseer said on Tuesday.

Delhi, 5 other high courts to get new chief justices: Supreme Court collegium

The recommendations made by the Supreme Court collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and justices UU Lalit and AM Khanwilkar of the apex court, will come into effect following orders issued by the Centre.

WPI inflation at record high of 15.08% in April

India’s wholesale inflation touched 15.08% in April, the highest in 27 years, powered largely by power and fuel prices, with the reading being in the double digits for the 13th straight month. The underlying cause: global supply-chain disruptions and the war in Ukraine.

Deceased student leader Anis Khan’s kin to move SC seeking CBI probe into murder

Anis Khan, 27, a former student of Kolkata’s Aliah University, was allegedly murdered in the early hours of February 19. His father had alleged that he was pushed off from the second floor of the house by three policemen and civic volunteers.

Is inflation surge different this time?

India’s benchmark inflation rate, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 7.79% in April. This is the highest inflation has been since the current government assumed office in May 2014.

‘Ample suspicion but…’: Judge acquits cops of teen girl’s murder in fake encounter

Meena Khalkho, a 16-year-old tribal girl was killed on July 6, 2011, in Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh. A judicial commission in 2015, which rejected the police’s encounter claim, said she died by a police bullet and injuries on her body suggested “forced sexual intercourse”.

The first India-Africa defence ministers’ conclave, held in February 2020, institutionalised defence cooperation between the two sides. The second edition of this defence dialogue was proposed for March this year but was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.
