Some people are feared missing after a boat capsized in River Jhelum in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning.
Four people died after a boat capsized in River Jhelum in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning, Muzaffar Zargar, medical superintendent of Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital said. While three people were rescued and hospitalised, several others are still missing.
It is not yet clear how many people were travelling on the boat. However, locals said that there were several school children onboard the boat.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is carrying out a rescue operation. Senior officials from police and civil administration, including Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, and Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, are also at the incident spot monitoring the rescue operations, reported PTI.
The incident took place as the flow of the river was very high owing to the incessant rains over the last couple of days. On Monday evening, the Srinagar Meteorological Centre had predicted light to moderate rain and light snow over higher reaches, along with thunder at most places in the Kashmir Division.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic incident.
“I am deeply grieved by the loss of lives due to a boat accident in Srinagar. My thoughts are with the bereaved families & I pray to the Almighty to give them strength to withstand this immense loss. Team of SDRF, Army & other agencies are carrying out relief & rescue work,” he wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Sinha added that he is constantly monitoring the situation and the administration is providing all possible help to the bereaved families.
