Chhattisgarh exit poll results 2023 highlights: Several exit polls on Thursday predicted a clear advantage to Congress in a neck-and-neck contest with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh voted in a two-phased assembly election on November 7 and 17, the only state among the five which went to polls in a high-octane electoral contest this month. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram are the other states that voted to elect their respective state assemblies.

Chhattisgarh, the tribal dominated state carved out of Madhya Pradesh has a 90-member strong legislative assembly. The first phase of the election were held on November 7 in which 20 constituencies voted. Polling for remaining 70 seats took place on November 17.
Chhattisgarh is witnessing a direct contest between the ruling Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The grand old party is expecting to retain power in the state for another term. On the other hand, the BJP is hoping to make a comeback in the state it ruled for 15 years from 2003 to 2018.

Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel contested from Patan seat. He was pitted against BJP's Vijay Baghel, who happens to be his distant nephew. The CM was also challenged by Janata Congress Chhattisgarh's Amit Jogi, son of ex-chief minister Ajit Jogi.
The other key Congress candidates include deputy CM TS Singh Deo (Ambikapur), Charan Das Mahant (Sakti), Tamradhwaj Sahu (Durg Rural), Ravindra Choubey (Saja) and Jai Singh Agrawal (Korba).
Former chief minister and BJP leader Raman Singh contested from his stronghold Rajnandgaon. The other saffron party candidates include Tamradhwaj Sahu (Durg Rural), Ravindra Choubey (Saja), Jai Singh Agrawal (Korba), Umesh Patel (Kharsia).
These elections are crucial as they are taking place months before the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May next year.

EC cracked whip on several occasions; seizures over ₹2,000 cr made
The Election Commission cracked its whip on several occasions to ensure a level playing field for all parties in the five states where assembly polls were held even as authorities seized freebies, drugs, cash and liquor worth over ₹2,000 crore aimed at alluring voters.
Elections were held in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana between November 7-November 30 and the counting of votes would take place on December 3.
Acting on complaints and inputs by the local poll machinery, the EC issued show cause notices and advisories to top politicians to adhere to the provisions of the model code.

Bhupesh Baghel, hailing from the Kurmi (OBC) community that comprises 14 per cent of the state's population, is the chief minister since 2018. He took over as the state Congress chief in October 2014, nearly a year-and-a-half after the Maoist attack in in May, 2013, in which many of the party’s senior leaders were killed.
He was first elected as a legislator from Patan in 1993 and then consecutively in 1998 and 2003 from the same constituency.
In the 2008 assembly polls, he lost to BJP’s Vijay Baghel, following which he was given a ticket from Raipur for the 2009 Lok Sabha election, which he also lost to the saffron party’s Ramesh Bais.
But he bounced back in the state in 2013 by winning from Patan assembly seat and again emerging victorious from the same seat in the 2018 polls.

The 2010s witnessed the rise of Maoism in Chhattisgarh, not to forget the 2010 Dantewada attack in which 76 Central Reserve Police Force personnel lost their lives.
On May 25, 2013, a convoy of state Congress leaders was ambushed by Maoists in Bastar district. At least 27 people including state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, party leader Mahendra Karma and former MLA Uday Mudaliyar were killed in the attack. Veteran Congress leader Vidya Charan Shukla was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital later.

But the results were indeed surprising for many as the Congress swept the elections by winning 68 out of the 90 seats.
