Cyclone Fengal highlights: Storm to landfall on TN coast tomorrow; red alert issued

The Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre of Chennai, Dr S Balachandran, said on Friday that the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu will be impacted more.

“Mostly coastal districts, the crossing point is between Karaikal to Mahabalipuram near Puducherry, so, all along the coastal districts, the impact will be more. There will be wind and rainfall. Today the wind speed was 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph. At one to two, there will be extremely heavy rainfall, while at many places it will be scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall,” said Dr S Balachandran.

As per the last information from the weather department, the storm lay centred about 330 km north-northeast of Trincomalee, 240 km east-northeast of Nagappattinam, 230 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 250 km southeast of Chennai.

“It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the afternoon of November 30,” the weather agency said.

For November 30, the IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry. Also, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts and Karaikal area.

The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm on Friday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department said.

The cyclonic storm, named 'Fengal' and pronounced as 'Feinjal' is likely to make a landfall on November 30 afternoon close to Puducherry with a wind speed, gusting upto 90 kmph.

Chennai is experiencing high tides and gusty winds as a result of the deep depression that has been brewing over the Bay of Bengal, ANI reports.

The IMD has warned of rough sea conditions and is advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.

The deep depression currently lies over Southwest Bay of Bengal, about 270 km north-northeast of Trincomalee, 300 km east of Nagapattinam, 340 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 380 km southeast of Chennai.

"It is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 06 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during afternoon November 30," the IMD said on Friday afternoon.

The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 9 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 11.30 pm of November 28 over the same region. It lay about 240 km northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 330 km east-southeast of Nagappattinam, 390 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 430 km southeast of Chennai, the weather office said in its latest update on 'X.'

The depression is forecast to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, by the morning of November 30. After it reaches the coast, the system will bring moderate winds, with speeds ranging between 45 and 55 km/h, gusting up to 65 km/h, along with heavy rainfall in coastal regions.

Chennai and its neighbourhood received sharp showers early Friday and people also witnessed chillness. A day's holiday was announced for schools in Chennai and Chengalpet districts on Friday.

Cyclone Fengal live updates: Jharkhand is likely to experience fog and partial clouds under the influence of cyclone 'Fengal' from Friday, a weather official told news agency PTI. The system might increase the minimum temperature by two-three degrees Celsius in the next two days, he said.
