A gunfight broke out after security forces launched an intelligence-driven joint operation along with Jammu and Kashmir Police at the Kathua-Basantgarh border earlier in the day.

The hiding terrorists opened fire on the search parties around 12.50 pm, prompting retaliation by the security forces.

Four heavily armed terrorists from the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group were trapped in the area, according to people aware of the matter.

The area was cordoned off and a few rounds were fired from both sides, police said.

Jaish-e-Mohammed, a proscribed terrorist organization, has been responsible for several deadly attacks in India, including the 2019 Pulwama bombing.

More details awaited.
