The case pertains to allegations that Karti, son of Congress leader P Chidambaram, was bribed by INX Media for using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against the company
Karti Chidambaram, son of Congress leader P Chidambaram, was, on Thursday, questioned for over nine hours by Enforcement Directorate in the INX Media case.
The case pertains to allegations that Karti was bribed by INX Media for using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against the company. There are also allegations of violations by INX Media while receiving foreign investment. Karti appeared before the Directorate on Thursday for the first time in this probe.
ED had filed the case in May 2017 against Karti, INX Media and its directors Peter and Indrani Mukerjea for alleged money laundering. The Mukerjeas are currently in jail for their alleged involvement in the Sheena Bora murder case.
The ED probe follows a similar case filed by CBI against Karti and the Mukerjeas on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.
Karti had rubbished the allegations after the launch of investigations by both CBI and ED in May 2017 and said: “A friend of mine is the auditor of that television company and it is the only connection I have with that firm.”
He had also taken to Facebook and said he was ‘unnecessarily’ drawn into the case by CBI.
On January 13, the ED had raided several premises linked to the Chidambarams, including the Delhi residence of P Chidambaram in connection with another probe against Karti.
The Chidambarams have denied any wrong doing in either case.
