The family of the deceased, Karim Ahmad Akhtar, had gone to the grave to perform some rituals, but found it half dug and the corpse missing, said inspector Narayan Chimulkar, in charge of Bicholim police station, under which Sankhalim village falls.
The family members then informed committee responsible for maintaining the graveyard and the police who reached the spot to inquire into the incident.
Inspector Chimulkar said sniffer dogs also failed to help make any headway.
Meanwhile, Sankhalim municipal council chairman Dharmesh Saglani, who was present at the spot when the police arrived, said the civic body will install CCTV cameras inside the graveyard to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.
“We will also put up proper gates at the graveyard and make sure that the graves are not damaged this way,” he said.
