On Satyendar Jain's leaked jail videos, AAP's Gujarat CM candidate blames BJP: ‘This will go on…’

Nov 30, 2022 06:35 PM IST

The AAP's Gujarat CM candidate Isudan Gadhvi asked why there was a CCTV inside the Tihar Jail where party leader and Delhi minister Satyendar Jain is currently lodged in a money-laundering case.

The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Gujarat chief ministerial candidate, Isudan Gadhvi, said on Friday that the ongoing controversy over leaked videos of jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain is the BJP's “plan [and] conspiracy”, which will continue till December 8 to “insult” chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and others.

“Someone is sick, has a medical certificate for it. Why is there a CCTV in jail?” Gadhvi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The BJP and the ruling AAP in Delhi have been at loggerheads since two leaked videos of Jain getting massage inside his cell at Tihar Jail, and also receiving “outside food” and being served those, surfaced on the internet. While the BJP has come down heavily on the AAP stating it is a “violation of norms in jail”, the latter has claimed Jain was getting physiotherapy treatments.

The row deepened after reports claimed that Jain was getting massage from a rape accused.

HT cannot independently verify the authenticity of the videos showing the Delhi minister in jail.

Jain moved a Delhi court on Tuesday, submitting that he was not getting any privilege in jail and was in fact, deprived of ‘proper food’ as per his religious beliefs and medical checkups. Via his advocate Rahul Mehra, the minister said that he has lost 28kg in jail. However, news agency ANI later reported citing Tihar Jail sources that Jain has actually gained 8kg of weight.

The court on Wednesday gave relief to the jailed minister, and asked the jail administration to give him food that is available to every undertrial, if he is on a religious fast. Jail authorities were also asked to file a reply on the kind of food they have been serving to Jain over the last six months and whether he was on a religious fast during the time period.

Jain had also moved an application in a special court seeking its direction to restrain media from airing or broadcasting any CCTV footage pertaining to him at Tihar. On Thursday, however, the minister withdrew the application and said he will move the Delhi high court instead.

Amid this row, Tihar jail authorities, meanwhile, has said that they provide a “balanced and nutritious” diet “uniformly” to all inmates on grounds of their “cast, creed, sex, etc”.
