Sikkim results: Prem Singh Tamang's SKM retains power, wins 31 of 32 seats in assembly election

Sikkim assembly election results: The counting of votes for 32 assembly seats in Sikkim began at 6am amid tight security arrangements.

Sikkim assembly election results 2024: The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha or SKM on Sunday, June 2, returned to power in the Himalayan state for the second consecutive term as it won 31 seats in the 32-member assembly and secured majority.

Chief minister Prem Singh Tamang of the SKM won the Rhenock seat by more than 7,000 votes and won the Soreng Chakung constituency as well.

The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which ruled the state for 25 years in a row till 2019, bagged just one seat, the Elections Commission of India website showed. SDF president and former chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling lost from the two seats he contested. Elections to the assembly were held simultaneously with the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls on April 19.

In the Poklok Kamrang assembly constituency, Bhoj Raj Rai of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha secured 8,037 votes while Chamling got 4,974 votes, they said.

The Sikkim Democratic Front supremo lost the Namcheybung assembly segment to SKM's Raju Basnet by 2,256 votes. Basnet got 7,195 votes while Chamling bagged 4,939 votes.

The majority mark in the Sikkim legislative assembly is 17 seats.

The counting of votes for 32 assembly seats in Sikkim began at 6am amid tight security arrangements.

Former India football captain and SDF candidate Bhaichung Bhutia was trailing behind SKM rival Riksal Dorjee Bhutia by 2,872 votes in the Barfung assembly seat.

In the 2019 assembly elections, the SKM won 17 seats, while the SDF secured 15 seats. The exit polls predict that the SKM will come back to power in the state.

In Arunachal Padesh, the BJP on Sunday returned to power for the third time in a row, as the party won 37 seats in the 60-member assembly and secured majority.

Counting of votes is underway for 50 seats for which elections were held in the northeastern state along with Lok Sabha polls on April 19. The rest 10 seats were won by the saffron party uncontested. Of the 50 seats, the BJP has won 27 and was leading in eight others.

Chief minister Pema Khandu is one of the 10 candidates who won unopposed. The saffron party had won 41 seats in 2019.

The National People’s Party (NPP) bagged three seats and is leading in equal number of constituencies, officials said.
