10 people killed in building collapse in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, rescue ops end

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are conducting rescue efforts at the spot.

At least ten people have died and five others were injured after a three-storey building collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut on Saturday.

Amid continuous rain, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are conducting rescue efforts at the spot.

The district administration in a statement said that among those who have died are five minors incluidng Simra, who was one and a half years old, Aliya (6), Reeza (7), Saqib (11), and Saniya (15). The other victims include Sajid (40), Naffo (63), Farhana (20) and Alisa (18).

Meanwhile, Sofiyan, aged 6, is in stable condition. The injured, including Naeem (22), Nadeem (26), Saqib (20), and Saina (38) are receiving treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College.

The incident took place around 5:15 pm and emergency services were immediately alerted, it said. The building's owner has been identified as Nafo Alauddin, who operated a dairy from the premises. Following the collapse, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed officials to promptly reach the site and accelerate relief efforts.

Senior officials including Meerut zone additional director general of Police D.K. Thakur, Divisional Commissioner Selva Kumari J, Inspector General of Police Nachiketa Jha, and Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada, have arrived at the site to oversee the rescue operation.

Teams from the NDRF, fire brigade, and police are actively engaged in the rescue efforts.

“As told by the family and relatives, 15 people were trapped in the debris of the house. All 15 have been rescued, 10 out of which have died and 5 are undergoing treatment. The area has been sealed and debris is being cleared. The rescue operation will go on till we find no possibility of any human life in the debris,” said district magistrate Deepak Meena.

Floods have impacted 11 districts in Uttar Pradesh leading to 17 deaths, according to the office of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

In a post on X, the chief minister's office said, “Relief payments of 4 lakh each have been given to the families of the deceased. Additionally, compensation has been provided to 30 individuals for the loss of 30 animals. A total of 3,056 houses have been damaged, and relief efforts are ongoing.”

Last week, eight people were killed and 28 were injured after a three-storey building collapsed in Lucknow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and 50,000 for those injured in the building collapse incident.
