• May 27-28: Strong surface winds (25-35 kmph) are expected over Gujarat.

• May 27-31: Isolated to scattered light rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected over Uttarakhand.

•May 30-31: Similar weather conditions are expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh.

• Rajasthan: Widespread severe heat wave conditions from May 27-29, with a gradual reduction afterward.

North, central India sizzle under severe heatwave; temperatures in Delhi soar to record 49.9 deg C

Large parts of northern and central India were in grip of extreme heatwave conditions on Tuesday as temperatures crossed 50 degrees Celsius in Churu in Rajasthan and Sirsa in Haryana even as the national capital sizzled with the mercury settling nine notches above normal for the season.

At least three weather stations in Delhi recorded maximum temperatures of 49 degrees Celsius or more with Mungeshpur and Narela in Delhi clocking 49.9 degrees followed by Najafgarh, also in the national capital, at 49.8 degrees, the weather office said.

Cyclone Remal: IMD sounds Orange Alert for Tripura

Amid the havoc created by cyclone Remal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert on Tuesday and stated that thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur at many places in the districts of Tripura.

The weather forecast has been done for the 24 hours commencing from the morning of Wednesday till the morning of Thursday, stated IMD.

Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 33 °C and 26 °C, respectively, the IMD stated further.

Schools to remain closed in Himachal's Una till May 31 amid heatwave

With mercury soaring to 45 degree Celsius in Una on Tuesday, deputy commissioner Jatin Lal has ordered closure of schools till May 31.

All schools would remain closed till May 31 following heat wave in the district, the DC Jatin Lal said.

The day temperatures are above normal in the state with Dhaulakaun recording a high of 43.2 degree Celsius, Hamirpur 42.7 degree C, Chamba 40.6 degree C, Kangra 40.8 degree C, Sundernagar 40.6 degree C and Mandi 40 degree C.

Three killed, 17 injured as storm, rain lash Assam

Three persons, including a woman, were killed and 17 others injured in separate incidents in Assam on Tuesday as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed the state in the aftermath of cyclone Remal, officials said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the inclement weather is likely to continue.

A 60-year-old woman, identified as Labanya Kumari, was injured when a tree fell on her in Kamrup district. She later died in Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Another person, Putul Gogoi, died in a landslide caused by incessant rain at the under-construction NHPC's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project at Gerukamukh in Lakhimpur district, officials said.

Churu records 50.5 degrees Celsius, highest in the country

Churu, in western Rajasthan, recorded the highest maximum temperature in India of 50.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as temperature ranged between 45 and 49 degrees Celsius in northern plains of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) weather data showed that Shri Ganganagar in Rajasthan was second warmest place in the country with maximum temperature of 49.4 degrees Celsius, followed by 49.3 in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh and 49 degress Celsius in Pilani and Phalodi, both in Rajasthan. Pilani’s day temperature was its highest ever maxim temperature with previous highest being 48.6 degree Celsius on May 2, 1999.

Crippling heatwave to persist in Jammu for next 7 days

Intense heatwave conditions will continue in Jammu for the next seven days, the meteorological department here said on Tuesday.

Jammu on Monday recorded a high of 43 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature remained near normal at 25 degrees Celsius.

The region has been suffering from extreme heatwave conditions for the past week, with temperatures consistently rising above 40 degrees Celsius since May 16.

"There will be no respite in heatwave or hot and dry weather conditions over plains of Jammu Division during next seven days,” an advisory issued by the department said.

Rajasthan to get a little relief from heatwave by end of May

Amid the soaring temperatures, Rajasthan is expected to witness a significant drop of 3-5 degrees Celsius in temperatures by the end of May, a senior official of IMD's Rajasthan Meteorological Centre said on Tuesday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre also indicated that severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist in the state for the next 48 hours.

Increasing concretization, humidity worsening heat stress in India's megacities: CSE report

Increasing concretization and humidity levels are exacerbating heat stress in India's megacities, which are not cooling down at night at the same rate as a decade ago, according to a new report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

The CSE analysed summer air temperature, land surface temperature, and relative humidity data for six megacities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai -- from January 2001 to April 2024.

The think tank found that increased humidity is worsening heat stress across all climate zones, even nullifying the marginal drop in air temperatures in Delhi and Hyderabad.

Kerala: Fisherman killed in boat capsize in Muthalapozhi

A fisherman died after the fishing vessel he was travelling in capsized in Muthalapozhi in Kerala's Thiruvanathapuram, authorities said on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Abraham hailed from Attingal municipality and his boat capsized while returning to shore in the Muthalapozhi harbour area.

The boat was ferrying a total of four people at the time of the incident. Three of them were rescued by local authorities.
