Year after murder, an apology email from Sheena’s account to Peter
Almost a year after Sheena’s murder, Indrani Mukerjea, on March 14, 2013, sent an email to her husband Peter, from a fake account created in Sheena’s name, part of the charge sheet which HT has accessed, apologising for how she had tried to “disrupt his and Indrani’s family life”. Sheena was murdered on April 24, 2012.
Almost a year after Sheena’s murder, Indrani Mukerjea, on March 14, 2013, sent an email to her husband Peter, from a fake account created in Sheena’s name, part of the charge sheet which HT has accessed, apologising for how she had tried to “disrupt his and Indrani’s family life”.
The 24-year-old Sheena was killed in April 2012, allegedly by Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna with the help of her driver Shyam Rai. Her body was burnt and dumped at a forest in Raigad, about 84km from Mumbai. All of them have been arrested. Sheena’s purported remains were found a month later and buried by the police, which treated the body as unclaimed.
The email stated: “I received an angry and at the same time a very sad e-mail from Indrani today. I have seen it only a couple of hours ago and have come to the conclusion I have been very much a part of causing this pain to her. It is very important for my own peace of mind that I make a genuine effort to clean up my bad karma...”
The email then talks about Indrani’s childhood, upbringing, Sheena and Mikhail’s birth and how Siddhartha Das was thrown out by Indrani’s parents. It also mentions how Indrani got injured in the 1991 civil unrest in Assam, and how she had lost her memory. Indrani, in the mail, claimed she became ‘Indrani Bora’ in Kolkata, and then described her marriage to Khanna.

The email also elaborated on Sheena’s relationship with Rahul. “We were first friends and then we got closer and was in a relationship with him before I realised. Along with my relationship, I also started substance abuse with Rahul and a few of his friends,” wrote Indrani in the email.
“I went back to Guwahati for a few weeks….Rahul visited me in Guwahati during that period and we continued our relationship and plenty of substance abuse. By then I was so much into Rahul and the substances that I was willing to do and say whatever as long as I had Rahul and the other things that I needed,” stated the email.
The email stated Rahul and his mother had planned to frame Indrani, and disturb her married life with Peter. “I was party to all of that, very selfishly blinded by my love for Rahul and the constant drilling in my head that Indrani was not even a relative and it was important that as I was in love with Rahul I should help them destroy your marriage with Indrani,” read the mail.
“When I look back, I am so ashamed to say what a horrible person I was. It was only as time passed that I realised I was living with a person who was not only lazy and selfish, but also had a serious Oedipus complex and was surrounded by equally selfish relatives,” wrote Indrani.
It then describes how Sheena was taken to a famous de-addiction centre in Mumbai. “When I knew that I was going to have to face Indrani at Sriparna’s wedding, I did not know what to do, which is when I told my parents about how Rahul and his mother used me to destroy her [Indrani],” read the mail.
The mail then stated, “It feels like my head is going to explode trying to remember my past and my heart will break into pieces with the betrayal from my closest. I just want to go into a deep sleep and never wake up. When I wake up, I want to wake in heaven.”
Peter, the INX Media cofounder who has been charged with criminal conspiracy, was on Monday remanded in CBI custody till November 26 and the agency decided to take him to Delhi, apparently for liedetector tests. The CBI arrested Peter after a phone conversation recorded by Rahul led the investigating agency to believe that he was withholding information.
