CBI told to produce Chhota Rajan in court in J Dey murder case

A special MCOCA court has slammed the CBI, which has been asked to investigate cases against gangster Chhota Rajan, for no progress in the investigation of journalist J Dey’s murder.
While hearing a plea filed by the Mumbai crime branch seeking the trial be deferred until Rajan’s arrest in the case, special MCOCA judge AL Pansare rejected the application and asked the CBI to produce Rajan before the court on January 7.
The state had intimated the CBI about the status of all the cases against Rajan and asked it to depute a prosecutor to take over the trial. However, the court in its December 22 order observed that the CBI had not appeared before the court and intimated it about the progress in the case.
“Despite the notification, none from the CBI appeared before the court, nor did it bother to intimate the court on whether further investigation in this case against Rajan has commenced... Rajan is not arrested in this case till date..,” said Pansare.
“To defer the trial, in such a situation, till the wanted accused is brought before the court, seems to me, to keep the trial in abeyance,” said Pansare. Hence, the court has asked CBI to produce the gangster before the court to face trial in the case.
Last week, the special MCOCA court had issued a production warrant against Chhota Rajan in the J Dey murder case. “The material placed before the court would prima facie show that the offence was committed at the instance of Rajan,” the court observed.
