Champai assembly constituency, represented by Mizo National Front chief and present CM Zoramthanga in Mizoram assembly, will be one of key constituencies of the state to be in the November poll focus.
Zoramthanga, who got elected from Champai as well as Khawbung constituencies in last elections, retained Champai and vacated the latter.
Zoramthanga may contest from this once again.
Although represented by a CM, the consituency has its own problems. One of them is related to Myanmar refugees, some of whom have already come together to form a militant outfit to 'secure their rights'. The state government has recently taken action against these refugees and it has been widely hailed across the state. But since Champai borders Myanmar, these Chin refugees continue to be a force in the constituency.
The real big wave of Chin refugees came into Mizoram after the 1988 crack down by the SLORC against democracy movement in Myanmar. Refugee camps were set up in Champai.
A place rich in natural beauty, Champai is about 192 km from Aizawl and offers fantastic view of the Myanmar hills.
